Andrew Garfield Hair Transplant

Opinions on Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man may differ, but there's no denying his good looks and impressive head of hair. Recently, however, rumors have surfaced questioning the authenticity of his locks, with many speculating that he may have undergone a hair transplant.

Not long ago, photos suggested that he was experiencing hairline recession, particularly around his temples. But now, that doesn't seem to be the case. So, what changed? Let’s delve into it!

Who Is Andrew Garfield?

Born on August 20, 1983, Andrew Russell Garfield, now 40 years old, is a British-American actor best known for his role as Peter Parker in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. Before venturing into acting and theatre, Garfield was deeply involved in sports. In an interview with The Guardian, he mentioned playing rugby, football, and cricket, as well as participating in swimming and gymnastics.

When sports didn't pan out as a career, Garfield found his passion in acting. However, like many aspiring actors, he faced significant challenges breaking into the industry. To support himself, he worked various odd jobs including waiter, barista, barback, telemarketer, and cricket coach, according to Backstage magazine. His breakthrough came with his film debut in Boy A in 2007, which showcased his exceptional acting talent.

The roles in The Social Network and Never Let Me Go marked pivotal points in his career, propelling him into the spotlight. His portrayal of Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor, followed by another nomination for Tick, Tick… Boom! (although he didn't win either time). Currently, Garfield is filming his upcoming movie, We Live In Time, alongside Florence Pugh.

Did Andrew Garfield Get a Hair Transplant?

Analyzing his photos, it appears that Andrew Garfield may have undergone a hair transplant sometime between 2020 and 2021. Previously, his temple hair loss was quite noticeable, accentuating the unevenness of his hairline. There was also some thinning at the top front of his scalp, though it wasn't particularly severe.

This pattern was evident during the filming of Tick, Tick… Boom! in 2020. However, by 2021, his hairline had changed quite suddenly and drastically. The temple hair had made a comeback, the density at the top was restored, and the hairline appeared much straighter in a very natural-looking way.

It's worth noting that Andrew Garfield has joked about using Propecia (the brand name for the hair loss drug finasteride) for his hair. In a 2021 WIRED Autocomplete interview, when asked, "How to get Andrew Garfield (sic) hair," he replied, "Propecia," but quickly added, "I’m just kidding." Some have questioned whether his jokes were truly just jokes.

Why Was Andrew Garfield Experiencing Hair Loss?

It's possible that Andrew Garfield was experiencing hair loss due to pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss caused by a combination of hormones and genetics. The primary culprit is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a byproduct of testosterone, which leads to the shrinking or miniaturization of hair follicles and eventually permanent baldness.

This type of hair loss progresses in a distinct pattern, which is why it's called pattern baldness. It often begins with the recession of the hairline at the temples, as seen in Andrew's case. Additionally, thinning of the hair at the top of the scalp can occur, potentially leading to a bald spot forming on the crown. The Norwood Scale is commonly used to track the progression of hair loss, and by 2020, Andrew Garfield seemed to be somewhere around Norwood 3.

Interestingly, on Stephen Colbert's show in 2021, when Andrew's brother and father appeared with him, Colbert noted the stark difference in their hair situations—Andrew had a full head of hair, while his brother and father were bald. Garfield quipped, "I got my mother’s genes. My brother got my father’s." However, the genetics of hair loss are more complex than simply inheriting traits from one parent.

What Type of Hair Transplant Did Andrew Garfield Get?

If Andrew Garfield had a hair transplant, it's likely that he underwent Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) surgery. In FUE, units of hair are taken from the back of the scalp, using the patient's natural hair, and implanted into the balding areas through small incisions. This method is minimally invasive and leaves no significant scarring.

Another technique is Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT). In FUT, a strip of skin with hair is removed from the back of the scalp, and hair grafts are then extracted from this strip. The main downside of FUT is the long, linear, and relatively visible scar it leaves at the back of the head. Due to this, FUE has become more popular and is generally preferred for its less noticeable scarring and quicker recovery time.

How Many Grafts Were Needed for Andrew Garfield’s Hair Transplant?

Since Andrew Garfield's hair loss was primarily confined to the front and temple areas, he might have only needed around 1,000 grafts for his surgery. You can use a graft calculator to estimate the number of grafts you might need as well. However, keep in mind that the number can vary between patients depending on factors such as the size of the balding area, the density of the hair in the donor area, hair type, and other individual characteristics.
